Wallingford Vikings Cheerleading welcomes all youth ages 5 – 14 (age as of 7/31/19)
The standard practice schedule begins with conditioning week July 29 - Aug 1. Cheer will practice Monday – Thursday 5:45 – 8:00 pm at Pragemann Park for the month of August. Our youngest cheerleaders will practice from Monday – Thursday 5:45– 7:15 pm.
Football games begin Sunday, September 1, 2019 and continue each Sunday thru playoffs in early November. Cheerleaders are expected to attend each game rain or shine. Viking home games will be played at Sheehan High School or Lyman Hall High School. Viking teams will play the holiday weekends of Labor Day and Columbus Day and traveling to away games is expected.
Attendance at all pre-season practices is crucial to the learning process for each cheerleader and their team. Practices will focus on safety and technique for stunting and learning the season’s cheers and dances. As per the WYFC Attendance Policy, athletes must attend 75% of the total pre-season practices beginning July 29th in order to gain maximum benefit of the learning process. Competition Teams will begin Monday July 22nd. Returning cheerleaders are not guaranteed their same position as last season.
Any pre-scheduled vacations in the month of August must be communicated to your child’s cheer coach prior to the start of season practices.
All WYFC board members and coaches volunteer their time to ensure a safe, positive and engaging athletic experience for your children. We ask that ALL Cheer parents VOLUNTEER at all league events and various duties during the season and exhibit a positive team spirit and energy. Also parents must ensure that each cheerleader is on time and prepared for all practices / games. Competition parents are also expected to assist with additional fundraising efforts and volunteer at the Local & State (and when necessary, Regional) competitions.
Registered Cheerleaders will receive a cheer vest, bodyliner, and skirt, and a Sideline cheer bow for Sunday games. All Sideline and Competition cheerleaders will participate in weekend football games (regular and post season) corresponding to their age/grade levels. Teams will be determined by age once registration has closed.
NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED to practice beginning July 22nd unless ALL PAPERWORK is COMPLETE!
The Medical Clearance form must be signed AND stamped by your child's pediatrician. The Medical Clearance must be dated after January 1, 2019. Please schedule an appt. with your child’s physician early to ensure the timeliness of this form. The Medical Clearance must be handed in prior to the first practice on Monday July 22nd. Cheerleaders missing this form will sit-out practice until it’s received.
WYFC offers the following cheerleading programs: Sideline, Competition and Inspiration.
*** VERY IMPORTANT ***: If your daughter participates in other extracurricular activities that require a large time commitment during the week, please think carefully about joining competition cheer. Joining a competition cheer team is a big decision and will require a commitment to be fully invested in the team and its schedule by the cheerleader and their family.
Sideline cheer is for anyone age 5 – 14 (as of 7/31/2019). Sideline will cheer only at weekend football games during the regular and post season. Sideline cheerleaders are expected to attend all summer practices, participate in all league fundraisers and represent the Vikings at all planned community events. Sideline cheerleaders will be placed on age appropriate teams. Ages are determined as of July 31 of the current year.
Competition Cheer is for those who are highly competitive and not afraid to work very hard to be successful. Competition teams are age based. There is no guarantee that cheerleaders in the same grade will be on the same competition team as their friends. The age cut-off date is July 31, 2019, therefore if your child is 10 on July 31, they will be placed on a D10 team. Team assignments will be determined after registration has closed. Competition cheerleaders will be placed on age appropriate teams.
Competition cheer provides a much more intense, focused and fast paced training program where all practices are mandatory.. Practices will be held 3-4 days a week after school begins.
All Competition cheerleaders must be available July 22nd – December 16th to travel to local, state, regional (Massachusetts) competitions, and the AYC National Championships in Kissimmee Florida December 11 - 16, 2019. Cheerleaders are required to attend all practices, participate in all league fundraisers and represent the Vikings at all community events. Participation in outside tumbling classes is expected.
A competition cheer contract will accompany all competition cheerleaders. The contract includes a merit point system that will ensure full participation in all practices, games and fundraising activities.
Competition cheer teams are required to participate in a weekend choreography camp and required to attend each team practice a minimum of 3 days a week once school begins. Practice times are tentatively scheduled for Mon - Thurs from 6:15 pm – 8:45 pm and Saturday’s (tbd). Split schedules may apply to accommodate equal mat time for each team. The week leading up to a competition may include an extra day. NOTE: All Competition cheerleaders must cheer at all in season and post season football games.
Competition is a time and financial obligation. WYFC and the community cannot guarantee annual financial assistance to teams attending Nationals; therefore cheerleaders and their families must participate in each fundraising opportunity and budget for $1200.00 per person to attend Regionals/Nationals. This estimate includes airfare/hotel/food and other related expenses.
The Wallingford Vikings do provide an Inspiration cheer program for any special needs individual living in the Wallingford area, male or female, between the ages of 5 and 21 (as of 7/31/19). Inspiration Cheer provides an interactive cheer experience focusing on activity and inclusion. Inspiration Cheerleaders will be guided by Viking Cheerleader Buddies to assist them during games and events throughout the 2019 season.
Inspiration cheer will register as Sideline Cheer and are invited to join on our August practice schedule if they so choose. The Inspiration team may cheer for specific home football games during regular and post season play.
Additionally, the Inspiration cheer team will learn a short routine that they will perform at local, state, and possibly regional and national competitions. The practice schedule will be incorporated into the master competition practice schedule and will not exceed 2 times per week.
